The History of Black Island: Treasures to be Found

Lovers Key Resort is located on the historic Black Island named for pirate Augustus Black.  In 1821, Augustus Black was a Portuguese Pirate. To avoid capture, he hid his pirate ship, the Dona Rosalia, behind what is now known as Black Island.

Legend has it that Pirate Augustus Black has a vast treasure of gold. Right before he died, he told his neighbors to dig up his sandy floor and they would find a great treasure.  Much to their surprise, they discovered a solid gold ball approximately five inches in diameter. Apparently, Augustus had melted his gold plunder so that it could not be identified.

Now, more than a century later, you too can discover what hidden treasures lay in the sands of Black Island.

Attention all shrimp lovers!!  It’s that time of the year when we celebrate the popular pink crustacean with a parade and the largest two-day event on Estero Island!  Ft. Myers Beach is the home to the largest shrimp boat fleet on the Gulf Coast of the United States, and we’re ready to celebrate the shrimp industry with a 5K run, a shrimp-eating contest, arts & crafts plus the crowning of the 57thShrimp Festival Queen. The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. where shrimp boats (trailered) and pirates, and floats and music fill the streets.  The two-mile journey begins on Fort Myers Beach’s main thoroughfare, Estero Blvd.  (Be aware that the Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed from 9:00am to 12:00pm for the parade.)  Bring a chair, find a spot on the parade route and enjoy the festivities and then be ready to party all weekend with the Shrimp Festival!  For more information, please visit: http://bit.ly/1E9Jjqw
